Rocking the Vote... Hard
A friend passed along information to me this afternoon to take part in a telephone campaign for Rock The Vote. Basically it involves calling people Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa who have signed up to be reminded to vote. They have a neat little web application that gives you a script and numbers to call. They first assign you 10 names and then you can go back and get more in batches of 20. I called around 20 people. Everyone I was able to get in touch with had already voted. I guess it doesn't help that I started at 5PM (got the information pretty late), but I encouraged people to tell their friends to vote too and wished [most of] them a good day. Most people were pretty nice and I tried to throw some jokes in there. For example, one time I got a woman's boyfriend and I told him I've been sleeping with his girl. (just kidding. I was respectful and nice, of course!)
Calling people was the least I can do. Seriously. It was the least I could do. For the first time in any election, I actually donated money to a campaign (Kerry!). I had hoped to use my ample free time to do some volunteer work, but never really got around to. I was very close to taking a weekend trip to Ohio (that would have lasted until Wednesday) to help the NY Democratic Party, but I chickened out at the last moment. I was afraid I wasn't going to be comfortable and getting home would have been difficult. If I could have convinced someone to join me, it would have totally been easier. Ah well. My hope was to go to Pennsylvania today and volunteer, but I found out on Sunday that they were already overwhelmed with volunteers. So making calls today was sadly the least I could do. I honestly wish I did more, but I'm not sure if I would have made much of a difference. It seems like people are going out in record numbers. In 2000, 105 million voted. I bet at least 120 million vote this year. The other thing seems to be a lot of people were better than me and actually got involved. People I spoke with who were never active in politics before were getting active and involved. God bless America.
Bush was on TV a moment ago and said he hoped the election is decided this evening. He said a fight won't help anyone. I agree so I hope he admits defeat early :-D.
It's going to be a long night.
